Would you stay in a potato hotel? I think there may only be one in the world, and of course it’s located right outside of Boise, Idaho. The Big Idaho Potato Hotel is only a few years old, and came from the Idaho Potato Commission’s Idaho Potato Truck that travels the country.

The Big Idaho Potato Hotel is located about 25 minutes outside of Boise, Idaho, really in the middle of nowhere. Kristie, the host, traveled the country with the Idaho Potato Commission’s Idaho Potato Truck, and decided to open the hotel shortly after.

Everything you need to know about the Famous Idaho Potato

This particular potato traveled the country for seven years, and was retired in 2019 as the hotel.

The Big Idaho Potato Hotel is really there as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is in the middle of the field in rural Idaho, in a windy and cold area, but it’s so much fun. We got there on a Sunday night, just after it snowed. The night was super windy and loud, but once you are there, all of that falls away. It’s such a cool experience that you forget all of it.

The hotel itself is fairly small — with room for a few chairs, a bed, and a few other things. They do have amenities like coffee, a refrigerator, water, towels, bathrobes, and slippers. They also have a record player.

They, however, do not have internet or TV — but my 5g did work while I was there. I was worried about being bored, especially because it was so cold we couldn’t spend any time outside, but we were not bored at all. We spent time exploring the potato, feeding Dolley the Cow, and spending time in the spa-like bathroom.

Bathroom

The bathroom is in a separate building than the potato, but they did a great job with remodeling. It has a shower, large bathtub, toilet, and sink. You can also see the stars through the roof (we couldn’t because it was too cloudy — but I bet it would be amazing).

It is about 50 feet from the actual potato so I was terrified I’d have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, especially with how windy and cold it was, but thankfully I did not.

Dolley the Cow

Dolley the Cow may have been the best part about the entire experience. She is right on the property and is very friendly. She comes right up to you wherever you are and loves to be brushed or fed. There is plenty of food on site to feed her any time.

Unfortunately, she did not like me very much, I am still not sure why. But she did like my boyfriend and he fed her many times throughout our stay. If it had been warmer, the property would have been perfect for a nice picnic in front of the potato and Dolley.

Is It a Real Potato?

No. No, it’s not a real potato. As silly as it sounds that I have to say that, there are many, many people who ask that question. The largest potato ever was around 11 pounds — and this potato is around six tons, so it’s quite a bit larger than potatoes grow.

But, it does look quite a bit like a potato, which makes the entire experience pretty cool.

I am a native Idahoan and I LOVE that we are famous for potatoes, so the fact that this hotel is right in our backyard is so amazing to me.
